Richard John Neuhaus, The Christian University In Crisis

Here’s an outstanding article from the inimitable Richard John Neuhaus, founder of First Things, consummate public intellectual. He is writing on one of my favorite topics: How the Christian University can continue to thrive up against enormous challenges. His article is from 1996. Thus, it may show a few signs of dating but nevertheless shines through with brilliant insight on what must be preserved in order for Christian universities to thrive. Here is a conclusion:

“A word in conclusion. Today the Christian university is in crisis. . . . It is often described as a crisis of secularization. . . . It is most accurately described as a crisis of Christian faith. The question that those who lead a Christian university must answer, and answer again every day, is whether the confession that Jesus is Lord limits or illumines the university’s obligation to seek and serve Veritas —to seek and serve the truth.”
